Mixed Media Abstract Painting "Invisible Matter" by Santa Fe Contemporary Artist Sandra Duran Wilson

I love astrophysics and science fiction too. I read an article on the existence of dark matter and then my imagination took over as to what might it look like if you could see it. Since most of the matter in the Universe is Invisible this is what I think it looks like. I built up layers and layers and then began to uncover some. Texture rules on this painting. The Venetian plaster mixed with pigments is burnished to a beautiful sheen.

Contemporary Art, Abstract Painting "The Inside Passage" by Santa Fe Contemporary Artist Sandra Duran Wilson

The Inside Passage This abstracted sunset is filled with colorful snippets and colorful patterns. I began this piece while teaching in the Pacific Northwest and it represented the deep canyons that are lush with flowers and trees. The sky is a rich bronze color and bits of fabric, gold leaf and plaster create incredible texture and depth. This piece will keep you entranced every time you look at it you will find something new.

Contemporary Art, Mixed Media Painting “Far Far Away" by Santa Fe Contemporary Artist Sandra Duran Wilson

This painting may appear like Encaustic, but it is created using layers of acrylic and a translucent film that has been painted on both sides and adhered to the panel. Your eye will stay busy discovering the depths and shadows of this scientifically inspired piece. This painting is how my imagination views gravity and the net of time.

Contemporary Art, Abstract Landscape “Farmland" by Santa Fe Contemporary Artist Sandra Duran Wilson

This painting reminds me of driving across the farmlands of the Midwest. The colors and textures of the land change with the time of day. Maybe being from the mountains instills a fascination with the very level land. This piece is built up layers of paint and mediums. I have created furrows in the gels and planted paint. There is also gold and copper leaf along with a clay flower that has been emblazoned with resin fragments.

Contemporary Art, Abstract Landscape “Music in the Trees" by Santa Fe Contemporary Artist Sandra Duran Wilson

A musical score is transferred along with imagery of tree bark. Trees create their own music as the move with the wind. The sounds of trees and the communication between them is a fascinating subject. I am recording sounds of the forest and translating the sounds into music and paintings. This piece is an early exploration into the research.
